Key Features

The combination of red and black markings on a white base, with the distinct separation of colors, defines Sanke.

Pattern Description

Ideal Sanke have a clear white base with well-balanced, non-overlapping red and black markings. The red should appear as large, well-defined patches, while the black spots should be smaller and strategically placed to enhance the overall appearance.

Name Meaning

Sanke, or Taisho Sanshoku, means 'three colors' in Japanese, referring to the white, red, and black coloration. The variety was named during the Taisho era, reflecting its development period.

History

Sanke was developed during the early 20th century, specifically in the Taisho era (1912-1926) in Japan. It evolved from Kohaku, with breeders introducing black (sumi) markings to the red and white pattern.

Ideal Characteristics

Judges look for a bright, clear white base (shiroji), deep, well-defined red (hi) patches, and crisp, strategically placed black (sumi) markings. The pattern should be balanced, with neither color dominating excessively.

Commonly Confused With

Sanke can be confused with Showa, which also has red, black, and white. The key difference is that Showa typically has more black (sumi) that often extends below the lateral line and onto the head, while Sanke has a white base with sumi primarily above the lateral line.

Judging Criteria

Judges evaluate the clarity and quality of the white base (shiroji), the depth and definition of the red (hi) and black (sumi) markings, the balance and harmony of the pattern, and the overall body conformation.

Identification Tips

  • Look for a white base color with red and black markings.
  • Black markings (sumi) should be above the lateral line and not dominate the pattern.
  • Red (hi) should be vibrant and well-defined, without bleeding into the white (shiroji).
