A pond skimmer and a leaf net are the two purchases that most reduce how much time you spend maintaining a koi pond. Everything else you buy makes the pond better. These two make it less work. A skimmer pulls floating debris off the surface before it sinks and rots; a net stops most of it arriving at all. Netting is also the only predator defence that reliably beats a heron.
Short answer: Fit a skimmer sized to your pond's surface area, running roughly 20 to 30% of total system flow if you also have a bottom drain, placed downwind and away from the waterfall return. Net the pond from the first leaf fall to the last, then take the net off before snow load. Netting does not insulate a pond and does not stop ice. For herons, depth over three feet, steep sides and a taut net beat every decoy on the market.
What leaf litter actually costs you
Leaf litter is the largest organic input into most backyard ponds and it arrives in a six-week window. One mature maple overhanging the water drops enough in an autumn to leave a measurable sediment layer by spring. That costs you in four places:
- Filter load. Leaves break into fine particulate that passes any leaf basket and lands in your mechanical stage. Mats blind off faster and flow drops.
- Oxygen. Decomposition consumes dissolved oxygen at the pond floor, where koi sit in winter.
- Hydrogen sulfide. Once the sludge layer goes anaerobic it produces hydrogen sulfide, which damages gill tissue. More than two or three inches of muck means degraded water.
- The spring ammonia spike. The one people miss. As water climbs past 50°F, decomposition on the bottom accelerates weeks before the biofilter colony recovers. Ammonia rises with nothing to convert it, exactly when koi are weakest after dormancy.
Tannins are the cosmetic version: leaves stain water the colour of weak tea, and no UV touches it. A $43 net for six weeks in autumn prevents most of this, which makes it the highest-return purchase in pond keeping.
How a pond skimmer works
A skimmer is a box or basket set at the water's edge with its opening at the waterline. A pump downstream draws through it, and the flow pulls the surface film in over a hinged or floating weir. Because the weir sits within an inch of the surface, the skimmer takes the top layer only, which is where floating leaves, pollen film and surface oils live.
Two things follow. Water level matters more than anything else: it should sit about an inch below the top of the opening, and another inch of evaporation stops the weir working. That is nearly always the answer when someone says their skimmer has quit. And a skimmer needs real flow: below roughly 800 GPH through the unit the weir barely opens and debris drifts back out. A skimmer on an undersized pump is an expensive leaf basket.
A skimmer is also not an oxygenator, so dissolved oxygen stays a job for aeration, and it does not catch pollen or fines, which pass through the basket and belong to your filter and UV.
How to size a pond skimmer
Skimmers are rated by the surface area they keep clear, not by pond volume, because floating debris is a surface problem.

Large purpose-built boxes are commonly rated to about 1,000 square feet and up to 10,000 GPH through a 2-inch port. Treat that as the ceiling for one unit whatever the spec sheet claims, because a long or L-shaped pond has dead corners no single intake reaches.
If you also have a bottom drain, split the flow: 70 to 80% through the drain, 20 to 30% through the skimmer. On a 4,000 GPH system that is 800 to 1,200 GPH through the skimmer, leaving the bulk of the flow lifting settled solids off the floor.
A GPH figure is meaningless without head. Size the pump on its curve at your actual total head, not the number on the box. Our pump and aeration buyer's guide works through that calculation.
Box skimmer, floating skimmer, or a pool-type unit
Three formats get sold as "pond skimmers" and they are genuinely different products. The in-wall skimmer box is the real thing: a moulded chamber excavated into the pond edge with the liner sealed to a faceplate, holding a hinged weir, a large debris basket, a filter mat and usually a pump chamber. It takes a serious volume of leaves and gives you a first mechanical stage. It is also the most work to install, because it must sit dead level on compacted base and be cut into the liner.
Floating and free-standing skimmers hang in the pond and tie into the suction side of an external pump. No excavation, no liner penetration.
Pool-type no-niche skimmers are the honest middle. The Aladdin No-Niche skimmer we stock is a swimming pool design adapted for ponds: a large strainer basket with a floating sleeve tracking the water level through about five and a half inches of travel, hanging off a 2-inch suction port. It needs no cutting into the pond edge, which is why people buy it.
Where it fits: an existing pond with a spare suction port, an external pump, an edge you cannot excavate. Where it does not: it wants 800 GPH minimum, has no filter mat stage, and its basket is smaller than a full box, so under heavy leaf fall you will empty it daily. Keep a spare basket on the shelf; that is the part that cracks. An in-line leaf trap is not a skimmer at all. It only stops a submersible pump strangling on leaves.
From the shop: The mistake we see most is a pump being sold as a skimmer. A PondMax EV Series pump at 700 to 3,600 GPH is the pump that goes inside a skimmer chamber. It is not the skimmer. You need both, and the pump is chosen second, sized to the skimmer.
Where to put it
- Downwind. Watch which way debris drifts on a breezy afternoon and put the skimmer there. Wind moves floating leaves far more than your pump does.
- Opposite the waterfall or return. You want the return pushing surface water across the pond into the skimmer mouth. Side by side, the flow short-circuits and the far end stagnates.
- Reachable. You will open it twice a week for two months a year, so do not bury it behind the one rock you cannot lift.
- Level. A box half an inch out of level has a weir that binds.
Retrofitting a skimmer to a pond built without one
A skimmer is the easy retrofit. A bottom drain means draining the pond and rebuilding the floor; a skimmer only means cutting the edge at the waterline.
Hang-in or no-niche. With an external pump and a spare suction port, or a bulkhead added above the waterline, this is a half-day job and no liner cut below water level. Lowest risk, lowest capacity.
Cut in a proper box. Drop the pond below the intended opening, excavate a level pocket in the bank, and set the box on compacted base with its opening about an inch above target water level. Seal the liner to the faceplate: sealant bead around the opening, liner over it, faceplate bolted through, and only then trim the liner inside the frame. Check level on both axes twice, because you cannot adjust it afterwards. Fit a union and an isolating valve from our plumbing and valve fittings, and keep liner patch and seam tape to hand.
Nets and covers: what they do and do not do
Netting is cheap, unglamorous and the most effective labour-saver in the catalogue. It is also described in ways that are simply untrue. Mesh netting does not insulate a pond, and it does not prevent ice. A net is mostly open space, with no measurable thermal effect on several thousand gallons. Anyone telling you a leaf net keeps koi warmer or stops the surface freezing is confusing it with a solid cover. Netting stops debris and predators, and that is enough.

Getting the net on properly
A net lying on the water has failed: leaves sit in it, rot through it, and a heron stands on the edge and reaches under. Tension it, and where you can, tent it over a low frame of PVC hoops so it sits four to six inches clear of the surface. Debris then blows off instead of accumulating. Stake every side and leave no gaps, because six inches is enough for a heron.
When a solid cover genuinely helps
A framed cover or pond tent, hooped PVC or aluminium with clear film over it, does what netting cannot: blocks wind chill, keeps snow load off the water, and in a cold region keeps part of the surface open. Never seal the pond completely, because gas exchange has to continue, and keep aeration running at mid-depth underneath. Predator protection that actually works
Herons
A great blue heron stands up to four feet tall, carries a six-foot wingspan and can eat a pound of fish a day. It hunts by sight at dawn and dusk, and once it has found your pond it returns while the food lasts. It will empty a small pond in a fortnight.
The useful fact is that herons wade. They hunt standing in water under about two feet deep and much prefer walking in from a gentle bank to striking from a vertical edge. Three defences follow, best first:
- Depth and edge profile. Three feet minimum over the main body, four is better, with steep sides at the perimeter and no shelving beach to walk in on. Permanent, and the right answer if you are still at the design stage.
- Netting, tensioned and gapless. The only method that reliably stops a determined heron.
- Line grids. Monofilament run back and forth across the pond and about three feet beyond the water's edge at varying heights. Herons dislike landing where they cannot judge clearance. Less certain, far less visible.
Raccoons, kingfishers and otters
Raccoons work the edges at night and reach into shallow water, so the steep sides that beat a heron beat them too; they rarely swim for fish. Where they persist, electric fencing works. The MorningRo electric fence kit gives 250 feet of aluminium wire and a 5,000-volt pulsed output at 0.1 joule from a wall outlet. Run two strands at roughly 4 to 6 inches and 12 inches, nose height for a raccoon coming in low.
Kingfishers dive from a perch, so remove overhanging branches and net. Otters swim and take large koi; only a full perimeter fence with a netted top stops one.
What does not work
Heron decoys mostly do not work. Herons are not reliably territorial about feeding grounds, pond cameras routinely catch them fishing beside a plastic decoy, and in breeding season a decoy can attract rather than repel. If yours has worked so far, the honest explanation is that no heron has found the pond yet.
Motion-activated sprinklers are hit and miss on raccoons, which habituate fast. Floating alligator heads, reflective tape and predator-eye balloons are decoration. Money spent on a net and on steepening the edges beats all of it.

In a mild climate like ours in San Jose there is no reason to shut a skimmer down at all. Where the surface freezes the choice is binary: run it all winter, or drop the water below the opening, pull the basket and mat, and leave the support pipe in so the box does not distort. Half-hearted shutdown is what cracks housings.
What to buy first
Buy the net. Under $50, on the pond this weekend, and it removes most of the input everything else in your filtration chain is fighting. Then size the skimmer, and choose the pump last.
If your pond was built without a skimmer and you are not ready to cut the edge, the no-niche unit is a reasonable interim, as long as the pump moves at least 800 GPH through it.
