A koi pond filter has three jobs, in order: catch solid waste before it dissolves, convert ammonia and nitrite to nitrate with bacteria, and polish what is left. Most units sold as "koi pond filters" do the first two badly and the third not at all, then print a gallon rating that assumes a shaded pond with three goldfish in it.
The single most useful rule in koi filtration: halve the advertised gallon rating. A filter sold for a 2,400-gallon pond is a 1,200-gallon filter once koi are in it. You do not have to take our word for that, because the manufacturers publish both numbers.
Short answer: Stage your filtration mechanical first, biological second, polish last, and size the whole chain to half the advertised gallon rating. For ponds under 2,000 gallons a pressure filter with a built-in UV clarifier is enough. From 2,000 to 8,000 gallons, a settlement stage feeding a bead or moving-bed filter with a separate UV. Above that, gravity-fed with a sieve or drum filter in front. Expect four to eight weeks to cycle a new filter, and never rinse biological media in tap water.
Halve the advertised gallon rating
PondMax rates every pressure filter twice, and the two numbers are not close.

Exactly half, across the range. And "with fish" there means ornamental fish generally, not a stocked koi pond. Koi are fed several times a day through summer, grow to two feet, and produce far more waste per gallon than goldfish. If you push stocking density, take another 25% off the halved figure. Undersizing does not fail gracefully; it fails as an ammonia reading in July.
Is your filter actually keeping up?
Test the water first, then read the pond. Ammonia and nitrite should both read 0 ppm on an established system; anything above 0 means the biological stage is undersized, freshly disturbed or starved of flow. The rest are symptoms you can read from the bank.

That last row corrects the most common error in pond content. Biological filtration converts ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate. Nitrate is the end product of that chain; removing it takes water changes, plant uptake or a bog.
The staging model: mechanical, biological, polish
Stage one: mechanical
Get solids out while they are still solids. Every hour a lump of waste sits in the water it dissolves further and becomes the biological stage's problem. A settlement chamber sized at 5 to 10% of pond volume, fed by a bottom drain, drops out the heaviest 60 to 80% of solids simply by slowing the water down. Sieves and rotary drum filters do it actively, screening at 200 to 300 and 40 to 80 microns respectively.
Stage two: biological
Bacteria need surface area, oxygen and contact time. Surface area is the number to compare, and it varies enormously: Kaldnes K1 moving-bed media offers about 500 m² of protected surface per cubic metre, while Matala matting runs from 150 m²/m³ in the black low-density grade to 460 m²/m³ in the grey polishing grade. Contact time matters as much as volume, which is why blasting 6,000 GPH through a chamber sized for 3,000 gives worse results than the smaller flow.
Stage three: polish
Fine matting, a UV clarifier, or a bog. This is the stage people skip, and it separates water you can see a tosai through at four feet from water that is merely not green.

For most backyard koi ponds the right answer is two of these, not one. A mechanical stage in front of a biological stage beats any single all-in-one unit at the same price.
From the shop: The most common filtration mistake we talk customers out of is buying a bigger pressure filter to fix cloudy water. Cloudy water after feeding is a solids problem. Adding a settlement chamber or a sieve in front of the filter you already own costs less and works better than replacing it with a larger version of the same thing.
UV clarifier versus UV sterilizer
Same hardware, different dose. Dose is a function of wattage per gallon and how slowly the water passes the lamp.
- Clarifier dose: around 10 watts of UV-C per 1,000 gallons, at the unit's maximum rated flow. Kills suspended single-celled algae. This clears green water and nothing else.
- Sterilizer dose: around 30 watts per 1,000 gallons, at roughly a third of the clarifier flow rate. Longer contact time means it also kills free-swimming bacteria, viruses and parasites.
The same 57-watt lamp is a clarifier on a 5,700-gallon pond and a sterilizer on a 1,900-gallon pond. Aqua Ultraviolet publishes both flow figures for every model in the Classic series: the 40-watt unit clarifies at up to 2,900 GPH and sterilizes at 967 GPH. For sterilizer performance you either slow the flow or plumb the UV on its own smaller loop.
What UV does not do: touch string algae or blanketweed. Those are attached, not suspended, and the water never carries them past the lamp. Anyone selling you a UV as an algae cure means green water only. Replace the lamp annually even though it still glows, because UV-C output falls off long before the visible light does, and clean the quartz sleeve every time you open the unit.
Bog filtration: the stage that removes nitrate
A bog is a shallow gravel bed the pond water flows up through, planted with marginals. Water enters through a perforated manifold at the base, rises through 12 inches of 3/8-inch pea gravel, and leaves over a weir back into the pond. The gravel becomes an enormous biological surface and the plants take up nitrate and phosphate directly. It is the only stage on this page that reduces nitrate rather than producing it.
Sizing a bog for koi
A water garden with goldfish can run a bog at 10 to 15% of pond surface area. A koi pond needs 25 to 30%, because the load is several times higher. Keep the gravel bed to about 12 inches deep; deeper does not help, since surface area rather than volume is doing the work. Turn the pond over through the bog every one to two hours, distribute the flow across a manifold rather than a single inlet, and fit a standpipe cleanout so you can flush the bed without digging it up.
Two honest caveats. Koi will uproot and shred soft marginals, so protect new plantings with mesh or stick to iris and cattail. And a bog takes a full season to reach its stride. It is a construction project, not a purchase.
Fix KH, not pH
Ponds with heavy biological filtration drift downward in alkalinity, because nitrification consumes carbonate. When KH falls low enough, pH stops being buffered and swings hard between dawn and dusk. That swing is what harms fish, not a stable high pH.
So never dose an acid "pH reducer." Measure KH with a carbonate hardness test kit and keep it above roughly 80 ppm. To raise it, put crushed oyster shell or limestone chips in a mesh bag in the filter chamber, where they dissolve slowly and self-limit, or dose a proper buffer such as Aqua Meds Buff It Up. Barley straw is an algae suppressant and does nothing for alkalinity.
Cycling a new filter
New media is sterile. It takes four to eight weeks at summer temperatures for the two bacterial populations to establish, and considerably longer below 60°F, because nitrifying bacteria slow dramatically in cold water. Aqua Ultraviolet quotes two to four weeks for its pre-seeded media, the fast end of the range. The sequence:
- Weeks 1–2: ammonia climbs. Feed lightly or not at all. Test daily with a liquid kit; strips are not precise enough at the low end.
- Weeks 2–5: ammonia falls, nitrite spikes. This is the dangerous stage. Nitrite is dangerous here because a young filter clears ammonia before it clears nitrite, so the nitrite stage runs longest. Salt at 0.1% protects the fish while it does. Ammonia is the more toxic of the two at typical pond pH, which the water treatments guide covers in detail.
- Weeks 4–8: nitrite falls to 0 and nitrate begins accumulating. That accumulation is the signal the filter is finished cycling.
Seeding shortens it. A bottled culture such as Microbe-Lift PL or a handful of established media from another pond gives the colony a head start. One exception that matters: never move media from a quarantine system into the main pond. You are transplanting whatever the quarantine was built to contain.
Maintenance cadence
- Bead filter backwash: when pressure rises 8 to 10 psi above baseline, typically every 7 to 14 days. Heavy loads want weekly.
- Settlement chamber: flush weekly, more in leaf season. Each flush takes under a minute and 10 to 30 gallons.
- Mechanical pads and mats: rinse whenever flow visibly drops, always in pond water, never in chlorinated tap water and never with a pressure washer.
- Biological media: rinse gently and never all at once. Stage cleanings a week apart so two-thirds of your colony is always intact.
- UV: clean the quartz sleeve seasonally, replace the lamp every 12 months.
The failure mode we see most often is over-cleaning: scrub every chamber on the same Saturday, kill the colony, get an ammonia spike on Tuesday. Dirty biological media is working media.
What koi pond filter to buy, by pond size
Under 1,000 gallons
The PF1200UV in the PondMax Ultra Series covers 600 gallons with fish, so it suits a lightly stocked pond up to about that. Its 13-watt UV is a genuine clarifier dose at that volume. Add a skimmer for surface debris and a coarse pre-filter on the pump intake.
1,000–2,500 gallons
The PF2400UV at 1,200 gallons with fish, or the PF3600UV at 1,800, both in the same pressure filter range. Buy the larger one. At this size the pressure filter's small media volume becomes the bottleneck, so add a mat chamber packed with graded Matala Japanese filter matting, coarse at the inlet and fine at the outlet.
2,500–8,000 gallons
This is where a bead filter earns its price. The Aqua UV Ultima II line spans 1,000 to 30,000 gallons on the manufacturer's rating, uses a ridged tubular media that resists the clumping ordinary beads suffer from, and backwashes in minutes by rotating a valve. The Ultima II 4000 is rated 2,000 to 4,000 gallons at 2,000 to 4,500 GPH and stands 20.5 inches across by 38 inches tall. 8,000 gallons and up
Go gravity-fed: bottom drains to a settlement chamber or drum filter, then a moving bed, then a shower stage. A 28-inch bakki shower distribution tray above the return is where serious koi keepers put their money, because trickling water over media strips CO2 and saturates it with oxygen in a way no submerged chamber matches. At this scale the pump and plumbing matter as much as the filter.
If you only change one thing
Add a mechanical stage in front of whatever you already own. A settlement chamber, a sieve, or even a mat-packed box between pump and filter does more for clarity and for your fish than any upgrade to the biological stage. Solids removed intact never become ammonia, never become nitrate, and never feed the algae you are fighting.
