Most koi ponds should not be heated. If your pond holds three feet of water or more and your fish went into autumn healthy, correct koi pond winter care is simple: stop feeding, keep one hole open in the ice for gas exchange, run an airstone at mid-depth, and leave the fish alone until spring. Koi sit out winter dormant between 39 and 50°F, and a pond allowed to do that quietly is safer than one held at an in-between temperature.
Short answer: Skip the heater. A de-icer plus an air pump costs a fraction as much to run and does the job that matters, which is gas exchange rather than warmth. Stop feeding below 50°F, resume above 55°F. Put the airstone at half depth, never on the bottom. Never smash the ice. The dangerous part of winter is the 48 to 65°F window on the way out in spring.
Why heating a koi pond is usually the wrong move
A koi's metabolic rate tracks water temperature, and so does every pathogen's. Below about 50°F your fish is barely eating and barely defending itself, but the bacteria and protozoa around it are equally sluggish. That balance is why dormancy works.
Partial heating breaks the balance in the worst direction. At 55 to 60°F, Aeromonas and Pseudomonas are multiplying and flukes and Costia are reproducing, while your fish is awake enough to feel stress with an immune system still running at roughly half efficiency. A pond held in the mid-50s all winter is more likely to produce ulcers in March than a pond that sat at 40°F.
One more fact the heater marketing never mentions: warm water holds less dissolved oxygen than cold water. A heater does not improve oxygen. It reduces it, while raising the oxygen demand of the fish and the filter.
When heating genuinely makes sense
Sick or injured fish. Koi struggle to mount a strong immune response below about 60°F. Warming a quarantine system into the high 60s or low 70s to treat an ulcer or an infection is standard veterinary practice, and there the heat is part of the treatment.
Show and growth programmes. Growth essentially stops below about 59°F, so keepers pushing size on young koi heat all year. That is a deliberate trade of money and risk for centimetres, run with backup power, alarms and the filtration to match. It is a legitimate choice, not a beginner's choice.
Warm-climate keepers avoiding a swing. In much of California, Texas and the Gulf states, water never gets cold enough for proper dormancy and instead bounces around the 50s all winter. If you heat to stop that, commit: hold above 65°F, not at 57°F. The half measure is the dangerous one.
From the shop: We do not sell pond heaters or de-icers, so we have nothing to gain by talking you into either. The winter losses customers describe to us almost never trace to cold water. They trace to shallow ponds, feeding too late in autumn, and ponds sealed under ice with no gas exchange.
The koi pond temperature ladder
Work off water temperature, not the calendar. A floating thermometer in the deepest part of the pond, read at the same time each morning, is the most useful piece of winter equipment you own.

The two jobs that actually matter in winter
Winter equipment exists to do two things: keep an opening in the ice so carbon dioxide, methane and hydrogen sulfide can leave and oxygen can enter, and keep enough water moving that the pond does not stagnate. That is the whole brief.
What winter kill actually is
Fish that die under ice are almost never frozen. They suffocate. A sealed ice cap, especially with snow on top blocking light, stops gas exchange dead, while decomposing leaves and sludge keep consuming oxygen and producing carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide with nowhere to go. By February a pond that looked fine in December has poisoned itself. Fisheries work calls it winter kill.
Sizing a de-icer, and what it really costs to run
A floating de-icer is a thermostatically controlled element that keeps one patch of water above freezing. Retail sizing charts are keyed to volume, though the honest driver is surface area and how cold your nights get. Costs below assume a 50% thermostat duty cycle over a 30-day month, at 18 cents per kWh (about the current US residential average) and 33 cents (about California).

Now price a heater against that. Raising 3,000 gallons by 15°F takes about 110 kWh of heat input, and that is only the one-off cost of getting there with no losses at all. Holding it means replacing heat lost through the surface, day and night, all winter. In most climates that is a continuous three-figure monthly load. Run a de-icer on its own GFCI outlet, never an extension cord, and if it has no thermostat, put it on one.
Airstone depth: the mistake that kills fish
Water is densest at 39°F. Below that it gets lighter, which is why ice floats and why the bottom of a frozen pond holds the warmest water in it, at a stable 39°F, while 33°F water and ice sit above. Your koi rest in that layer, and it is the best thing your pond does for them all winter.
An airstone on the bottom destroys it. Rising bubbles drag warm bottom water to the surface, where it dumps its heat into freezing air and sinks back colder. Run that for a week and you have mixed the whole column to near freezing and taken away the only refuge your fish had.
So in autumn, before the first hard freeze, move the diffuser to roughly half depth: two feet down in a four-foot pond, three feet in a six-foot pond. You still get gas exchange and a moving patch of surface without stirring the bottom. De-icer, airstone, or both
Both, if your winters are genuinely cold. The de-icer guarantees the hole stays open through a hard freeze; the air pump gives you active gas exchange instead of passive diffusion across a small opening. In milder climates the airstone alone usually keeps a patch open and the de-icer never earns its keep.
Whether the main pump and filter run depends on where you live. In zones 8 to 10, where the pond never truly freezes, keep it running: the biofilter stays alive and spring startup is easier. In hard-freeze country, shut it down. Waterfalls shed enormous amounts of heat, external plumbing splits, and a pump that ices up can siphon the pond dry. Pull the pump, drain and blow out the lines, drain the filter and UV canister, and store the pump indoors submerged in a bucket.
Never break the ice
Hitting a frozen pond with a hammer sends a concussive shockwave through water, which transmits it perfectly, and it can kill dormant koi. If the pond ices over and you have no de-icer running, set a pot of hot water on the ice and let it melt through. Slow, boring, correct.
A month-by-month koi pond winter care checklist
Months below are for a temperate northern-hemisphere pond. Your thermometer overrides the calendar every time.
September into early October, water 70 to 60°F
The real work happens here, while the pond can still recover from being disturbed. Remove dying marginal plants rather than letting them rot in place, and trim lilies to a few inches above the pot. Vacuum sludge out of the low spots, because organic matter left on the bottom is oxygen demand under the ice later. Clean the filter now, not in November. Get the leaf net on before the trees drop: our pond covers and netting range includes staked kits, and the PondMax leaf and predator net handles leaves and herons at once. Netting does not insulate a pond and will not stop ice.
Mid to late October, water 60 to 50°F
Move the fish onto a cool-water diet. Wheat germ formulas are lower in protein and pass through the gut faster, which is what you want as digestion slows; browse wheat germ koi food or pick up Hikari Wheat-Germ floating pellets. November, water dropping through 50°F
Stop feeding. Not "feed a little less". Stop. Move the airstone to mid-depth, and decide whether the main system runs or gets winterised before the first hard frost rather than during it. If you use a cold-water bacteria product, this is when it goes in; blends such as Aqua Meds Arctic Blend keep working on bottom sludge down into the high 30s. It is a nice-to-have, and a pond cleaned properly in September needs it less.
December through February, water 45 to 39°F
Do almost nothing, deliberately. Check weekly that the de-icer runs, that the airstone is still bubbling and has not drifted to the bottom, and that the water level holds. Brush snow off part of the surface if you can reach it from the bank. Do not feed, do not net fish out, do not run treatments. Most medications are useless or dangerous below 50°F.
March, water 40 to 50°F
Restart season. Clear debris that blew in and restart the filter, treating the biofilter as if it were new: the nitrifying colony survives winter at much reduced numbers, and the nitrite-oxidisers are slowest to come back. Test ammonia and nitrite twice a week for the first month. Do not feed yet.
April into May, water 55°F and up
Once the water is reliably above 55°F and the ten-day forecast will not drop it below 50°F, start feeding again with wheat germ, tiny amounts, once a day. Then watch the fish closely for six weeks.
The spring danger window, 48 to 65°F
More koi are lost in April and May than in January, because of a mismatch in wake-up times. Aeromonas and Pseudomonas, the bacteria behind most ulcers, become active from around 48°F. Costia, Chilodonella, Trichodina and flukes reproduce above 50°F. Your koi's immune system is still at roughly half capacity even at 65°F, after five months of burning reserves without eating.
In practice: watch for flashing, clamped fins, a fish hanging alone, or red patches at the base of the fins. Keep feeding light and low-protein until the water settles in the mid-60s, and add no new fish until the pond is consistently above 65°F. Koi herpesvirus expresses between about 61 and 81°F, with peak mortality 72 to 78°F, one more reason new arrivals belong in a heated quarantine system rather than a spring pond.

What you do not need to buy

Skip the pond heater unless you fall into one of the three groups above. Skip solar pond heating entirely. The energy needed to lift several thousand gallons by even ten degrees is orders of magnitude beyond what a hobby solar collector delivers. The one sensible solar application here is a solar aerator, and only with battery backup, because dissolved oxygen bottoms out just before dawn and a panel-only aerator is off all night. Skip mesh sold as ice prevention; netting does nothing thermal. A rigid or greenhouse-style cover does reduce heat loss, and that is a different product.
Buy the de-icer at a farm supply store. A stock tank de-icer rated safe for plastic tanks is the same device sold to pond keepers at a markup. Spend the difference on aeration and a thermometer.
