Koi Pond Water Treatments and Medications: A Practical Guide

Most koi disease is a water quality problem wearing a costume. The honest sequence for koi pond water treatment runs: test the water, fix the water, work out what is wrong with the fish, and only then treat, as narrowly as you can. A shelf of remedies is worth less than a $50 test kit and the discipline to use it weekly.

Short answer: Hold KH between 100 and 200 ppm and stop worrying about the exact pH. Use a chloramine-rated conditioner on every drop of tap water. Ammonia and nitrite both read zero or you have a problem to solve today. Salt at 0.3% is 25 lb per 1,000 gallons and it does not treat everything. Diagnose before you dose, treat the fish rather than the pond, and aerate hard through any treatment.

The numbers to hold in a koi pond

Test weekly in the growing season, twice a week in spring, and after anything unusual. An API Freshwater Master Test Kit covers pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate; the API GH and KH test kit covers the two numbers most pond owners never measure.

Manage KH, not pH

This is the correction that matters most, because the usual advice is dangerous. If your pH reads 8.4, the fix is not a bottle of "pH down". Koi live perfectly well at 8.4. What harms them is a pH that moves, and pH moves when nothing in the water is holding it.

KH, carbonate hardness, is the pond's chemical shock absorber. Nitrifying bacteria consume carbonates as they work, algae strip carbon dioxide out all day and put it back all night, and a pond at 20 ppm KH can swing more than a full point of pH between dawn and dusk. That daily swing is far more stressful than any steady reading.

So buffer up and leave pH alone. Sodium bicarbonate is cheap and works: roughly 63 grams per 1,000 gallons raises KH by about 10 ppm and parks pH near 8.2. A product such as Aqua Meds Buff It Up holds longer. Add half of what you calculate, wait a day, retest, then add the rest. Acid pH reducers belong in a swimming pool. They strip the buffer that was protecting you, and the crash that follows is what kills fish.

What a water conditioner actually does

A dechlorinator neutralises chlorine and binds heavy metals. That is the whole job. It does not balance pH, it does not feed bacteria, and only some products touch ammonia.

Chloramine is where this matters. Most municipal supplies now use chloramine, chlorine bonded to ammonia, because it is more stable in the pipe than free chlorine. When a conditioner breaks that bond it releases the ammonia into your pond. On a 10% top-up into an established pond the filter absorbs it. On a 50% emergency change, or a new pond with no biofilter, it does not.

Match the product to the job. A plain sodium thiosulfate dechlorinator handles chlorine and is fine for small top-ups. For large changes, new ponds, or any pond on a chloramine supply, use a conditioner that also binds ammonia: Seachem Pond Prime and Kordon AmQuel Plus convert free ammonia into a form fish cannot absorb but the filter still processes. Call your utility if you do not know which disinfectant they use, and compare the rest of our pond water conditioners on that basis.

Dose conditioner for the whole pond volume, not the volume you are adding, and add it while the hose runs.

Ammonia and nitrite: reading the number properly

An ammonia reading on its own tells you little. Your kit measures total ammonia, and only a fraction of that is the toxic un-ionised form. That fraction is set by pH and temperature.

Chronic gill and kidney damage starts near 0.05 mg/L of un-ionised ammonia, and fish start dying near 0.6 mg/L. So the same 1.0 ppm reading is minor at pH 7.0 and an emergency at pH 8.5, and those percentages rise by about 70% again by 82°F. It is also why you discard shipping water: bagged water is high in carbon dioxide and low in pH, which holds ammonia as harmless ammonium, and opening the bag raises pH and flips it toxic.

Nitrite works differently. It crosses the gill and locks up haemoglobin so the blood cannot carry oxygen, the condition called brown blood. Chloride ions compete for that same uptake pathway, so salt at 0.1% gives real protection while the filter catches up. That is the best emergency use of salt in a koi pond.

Salt: what it does, what it does not, and the dosing math

Salt is useful and routinely oversold. At 0.1% it blocks nitrite uptake and reduces the osmotic work a stressed fish does. At 0.3% it kills some ciliated protozoa, including Costia, Chilodonella and Trichodina. Above 0.6% you risk gill damage. It does nothing for flukes, anchor worm, fish lice or a bacterial ulcer, and it kills submerged plants at 0.3%.

The math is worth doing on paper. 0.3% means 3 grams per litre. A US gallon is 3.785 litres, so that is 11.4 grams per gallon, or 0.025 lb per gallon.

  • 0.1%: 8.3 lb of salt per 1,000 gallons
  • 0.3%: 25 lb per 1,000 gallons
  • A 3,000-gallon pond to 0.3%: 75 lb

Use plain non-iodised salt with no anti-caking agent, which usually means solar or water-softener salt. Dissolve it in a bucket and add it in thirds over 24 to 48 hours. Salt leaves a pond only in water you physically remove, so dosing again in May after a March treatment with no water change between is stacking. A salinity meter costs less than a dead koi.

Several treatments also do not mix with salt. ProForm-C is labelled for use below 0.05% salinity, and makers of formalin-malachite blends generally say not to combine them with anything else.

Which koi pond water treatments earn their money

Beneficial bacteria. Useful when starting a pond, restarting a filter in spring, or after a treatment that damaged the colony. Microbe-Lift PL is the standard. In a mature, stable pond, monthly dosing is mostly a subscription.

Enzymes and sludge digesters. These work on the organic muck that drives oxygen demand and feeds algae. Aqua MedZyme is a reasonable autumn and spring addition, though a pond vacuum works faster.

Barley straw. An algae suppressant, not a buffer and not a treatment. It releases peroxide and phenolic compounds as it decomposes aerobically, which takes four to eight weeks, and the research shows it inhibits some algae species while doing nothing to others. Put it in before a bloom or not at all.

Algaecides. Handle with care around koi. Copper-based farm-pond products can be lethal in a small recirculating system, and even fish-safe algaecides carry a real risk, because a large mass of algae dying at once consumes an enormous amount of oxygen. Treat a third of the pond at a time and run every airstone you own.

Montmorillonite clay. Popular, harmless, and the evidence that it does anything measurable for koi is thin. We do not stock it and do not miss it.

Diagnose before you dose

Broad prophylactic dosing of a whole pond twice a year, whether or not anything is wrong, is usually the wrong move. It stresses fish, knocks back the biofilter, wastes money, selects for resistant parasites, and hides the real cause. Ponds medicated on a schedule usually have a water quality problem nobody has found yet.

Diagnosis needs a full set of water tests and a look at what is on the fish. A 40x to 400x microscope and a skin scrape, taken by drawing a coverslip gently along the flank towards the tail, identifies almost every external parasite that matters. Until then, work from symptoms and treat conservatively.

The medicine cabinet

Everything below assumes heavy supplemental aeration for the whole treatment period. Most pond medications either consume oxygen or kill organisms whose decay consumes it, and oxygen crashes during treatment kill more fish than the parasites do.

Parasites

Flukes get praziquantel, and nothing else in the cabinet substitutes. Aqua Prazi is pure praziquantel at 25 g per 2,500 gallons, treats gill and skin flukes and tapeworm, and is gentle on the biofilter. It does nothing for ich, Costia or anchor worm, so it is not a general-purpose parasite treatment.

Ciliated protozoa, ich included, respond to formalin and malachite green combinations such as ProForm-C, usually given daily over three days. Formalin strips dissolved oxygen from the water, so aeration is not optional, and these products carry a 50°F lower limit for a reason. Ich is only killable in its free-swimming stages, and its life cycle runs about four days at 80°F but over five weeks below 45°F, which is why one dose never works and the repeat interval must follow water temperature.

Potassium permanganate deserves a warning rather than a recommendation. It is a powerful oxidiser with a working dose of 2 ppm that climbs with organic load, it destroys the biofilter on contact, it creates a large oxygen demand, and an overdose kills everything. Ponds get wiped out with it every year by people who estimated their volume. We do not stock it.

Ulcers, fin rot and bacterial infection

Bacterial infections in koi are almost always secondary. Something broke the slime coat first: a parasite, a rough net, a spawning injury, three weeks of bad water. Treat the bacteria without finding that cause and it recurs within a month.

For a discrete ulcer: net the fish into a bowl, gently clean the dead tissue from the wound, apply a wound dressing or strong iodine tincture, then leave it alone. Do not re-apply daily, because repeated topical treatment disrupts the new cells migrating across the wound. Support with clean water and salt at 0.1 to 0.3%.

On antibiotics, be clear-eyed. There are no FDA-approved antibiotics for ornamental fish, the approved food-fish drugs are prescription and Veterinary Feed Directive controlled, and injectable enrofloxacin is a veterinary procedure requiring sedation and dosing by weight. If a fish needs antibiotics, that is a conversation with an aquatic veterinarian, not a purchase decision. Casual antibiotic use breeds resistant infections no product on any shelf will touch.

The botanicals, correctly labelled

MelaFix is a tea tree (Melaleuca) extract. It is an antiseptic, not an antibiotic, which is worth knowing before you rely on it for a deep ulcer. It has a modest place supporting minor fin damage, and any product that leaves an oily film needs surface agitation with it.

Treat the fish or treat the pond

Where you can catch the affected fish, treat it in a separate tank. You use a fraction of the chemical, you can watch the fish, you can pull it out if it reacts badly, and you leave your biofilter alone. Whole-pond treatment makes sense when every fish is affected, or when the parasite has free-swimming stages in the water as ich does. A quarantine tank doubles as a hospital tank, which is most of the argument for owning one.

What belongs in your shelf kit

In the order we would buy it: a master test kit and a KH and GH kit, a chloramine-rated conditioner, a carbonate buffer, a 40 lb bag of plain solar salt, praziquantel because flukes are the most common thing you will actually find, one formalin-malachite product for ciliates, beneficial bacteria for the spring restart, and a bowl, a soft net, a thermometer and a dedicated bucket.

Not on the list: antibiotics, potassium permanganate, algaecide as a routine purchase, and anything bought before you knew what was wrong. If the budget is finite, spend it on testing and a bigger air pump rather than a wider medicine shelf.

Is MelaFix an antibiotic?

No. MelaFix is a tea tree oil extract, sold as an antiseptic and healing aid. It can help minor fin damage and superficial wounds. It will not resolve a deep ulcer or a systemic bacterial infection, and treating a serious Aeromonas case with it costs you the time the fish needed. Genuine antibiotics for koi require a veterinarian.

My water tests fine but a fish is sick. What now?

Get the fish into a bowl and look at it in good light: fins, gill covers, vent and both flanks. Take a mucus scrape if you have a microscope. Isolate it in a treatment tank with clean water, salt at 0.1 to 0.3% and strong aeration, and hold off on medication until you know what you are treating. If it has a deep ulcer or is losing balance, call an aquatic vet.
