Pond Liner Guide for Koi: Sizing, Materials and EPDM Installation

A pond liner is the one component in a koi pond you cannot upgrade later without draining the pond and starting again. We steer almost every koi keeper to 45-mil EPDM rubber, bought as a single sheet cut to size, laid over 8 to 10 oz geotextile, and folded rather than stretched into the shape of the hole.

The second most useful thing we can tell you costs nothing: buy the sheet four feet longer and four feet wider than you think. The sizing formula catches people out, and a liner six inches short is scrap.

Short answer: Use 45-mil EPDM, Firestone (now Holcim Elevate) PondGard, for any koi pond you intend to keep. Size it as pond length + (2 x max depth) + 4 ft, and the same for width. Put 8 to 10 oz non-woven geotextile underneath, not 4 oz. Pleat the liner into the contours instead of pulling it tight. Expect about $1.75 per square foot, which puts a 12 x 8 x 4 ft pond at roughly $840 in liner. Go to concrete or block only if you want vertical walls, a formal profile, or a pond bigger than one sheet covers.

How to size a pond liner

The formula is the same for both dimensions. Depth is doubled because the liner goes down one wall and back up the other.

Liner length = pond length + (2 x maximum depth) + (2 x overlap)
Liner width = pond width + (2 x maximum depth) + (2 x overlap)

Overlap is where people go wrong. Twelve inches a side is the absolute minimum and leaves you nothing to work with. Use 24 inches a side on a koi pond: that buys an anchor trench, room to tuck the edge under coping stone, and slack for first-season settling. Two feet a side adds four feet to each dimension.

Worked example

A pond 12 ft long, 8 ft wide, 4 ft at the deepest point:

  • Length: 12 + (2 x 4) + 4 = 24 ft
  • Width: 8 + (2 x 4) + 4 = 20 ft
  • Sheet: 24 x 20 = 480 sq ft, about $840 of EPDM

Why EPDM for koi

EPDM wins on the two properties that matter in a shaped pond: it stays flexible at every temperature a backyard sees, and it stretches far enough to be forgiving. Firestone's data sheet puts the brittleness point at -49°F and break elongation at 500%. No realistic outdoor condition makes a PondGard sheet go stiff.

On fish safety, use the manufacturer's own words rather than a certification number. Firestone's published installation guide calls PondGard "a fish friendly synthetic rubber membrane" and describes it as safe for fish and wildlife. That is a manufacturer statement, not a third-party potable-water certification. Any pond article claiming PondGard meets NSF/ANSI 61 or 372 is quoting a drinking-water standard that does not apply to pond liner.

The practical case is duller. EPDM patches with a piece of itself and a roller, so a raccoon or a careless shovel in year twelve is an afternoon's work rather than a rebuild.

Take 45 mil, not 60. Sixty is the same rubber, a third heavier, and harder to drape into a small pond. The right answer to rocky ground is better excavation and heavier underlayment, which costs a fraction as much.

PVC, and the cold-weather myth

PVC liner gets accused of turning brittle at freezing point. That is wrong, and an earlier version of this page repeated it. Pond-grade PVC geomembrane is typically specified to pass a cold-impact test at about -20°F. It does not shatter in a normal winter.

The real objections are different and still disqualifying. PVC stiffens below roughly 50°F enough to be miserable to install, and it degrades where sunlight hits it, which is exactly the waterline band. Plasticizer chemistry matters too: unspecified PVC sheet can leach phthalates, so only fish-grade formulations belong near koi. Defensible on a tight budget in a shaded pond. Not what we would put under fish worth more than the liner.

The other four

RPE deserves more respect than it gets: about a third the weight of EPDM for the same area, and weldable in the field so big ponds seam reliably. It is stiffer and will not conform to tight shelves as sweetly. HDPE needs a welding rig and a trained operator, so it is not a backyard product. Butyl performs much like EPDM and is now scarce and expensive here.

Preformed rigid shells are typically 50 to 300 gallons and 18 to 24 inches deep. That is a water feature, not a koi pond, at any level of experience. Fibreglass over a block shell is a legitimate premium build at roughly $3 to $6.50 per square foot in materials, provided the coating is pond-rated rather than a boat-hull resin.

What a liner actually costs

Pond writing likes to sort liners into budget at $0.35 to $1.75 per square foot and premium at $2 to $5, with EPDM filed under premium. The numbers do not support that. Across the US market, 45-mil EPDM runs about $0.75 to $2.00 per square foot, and ours sits at $1.75. That is the same band as fish-grade PVC and RPE, above HDPE, and an order of magnitude below fibreglass or concrete. EPDM is the mid-priced option that outlives the cheap one two or three times over.

Put it against the rest of the build. On a 2,400-gallon pond the liner is around $840. Pump, filter, UV and plumbing will comfortably exceed that, and one show-quality koi can too. Budget $0.25 to $0.40 per square foot more for underlayment.

Underlayment: 8 to 10 oz, not 4 to 6

Underlayment is non-woven geotextile measured in ounces per square yard. Garden-pond advice says 4 to 6 oz. That is too light for a koi pond and always has been. Firestone's installation guidance specifies at least 8.0 oz/yd² over hard substrates. Use 8 to 10 oz for a koi pond, and 12 to 16 oz over shale, compacted rubble, decomposed granite, or anywhere you found roots while digging. Note that the PondGard listing says no underlayment is required. Buy it anyway.

Sand has a narrow role. Two inches screeded on the flat bottom helps you level. It will not stay on a 45-degree wall or a shelf edge, which is exactly where a stone or a root tip finds the liner. Sand under the fabric on the floor, fabric everywhere.

Roots are the long game. A willow, poplar or bamboo within reach will eventually push through fabric and rubber both, so cut them back hard at excavation and consider a vertical root barrier.

Installing EPDM: pleat, do not stretch

  1. Prepare the hole. Pull every root and stone, then run your hand over the whole surface. Cut shelves level and compact any backfill, because settlement under a liner drags it.
  2. Lay the geotextile with 6 to 12 inches of overlap between pieces and a foot of run-up over the rim.
  3. Warm the sheet. Unroll the EPDM in the sun and let it relax; Firestone specifies about 30 minutes. Cold rubber fights you, warm rubber flows into the shape.
  4. Drape without tension. Work from the deepest point outward in socks or soft shoes, gathering excess material into deliberate folds pressed flat against the wall.
  5. Fill slowly. Water weight seats a liner far better than you can. Keep adjusting pleats as the level rises.

Here is why pleating beats pulling. EPDM elongates 500% before it breaks, so it will stretch if you pull it, and it does not come back. A stretched sheet is thinned and under permanent tension, thinnest exactly where it bends over a shelf edge. That is where punctures happen. Manufacturer guidance says panels go in without tension, and on a curved pond the only way to obey that is to take up slack in folds.

Anchor trench and hiding the edge

Dig a trench outside the rim, minimum 12 inches wide and 16 inches deep, run the liner across the bottom and 6 inches up the back wall, then backfill. That is Firestone's specified section, and it stops the sheet creeping down the bank.

Set coping stone so it overhangs the water by about two inches. That shades the exposed waterline band, hides the black edge, and gives a raccoon nothing to stand on. Trim excess liner only after the pond has been full a week. Low-expansion pond foam behind rock work stops water short-circuiting behind stones.

Seams, penetrations, and the first fill

The best seam is the one you never make. EPDM comes in widths up to 50 feet, so most backyard koi ponds go in as one sheet. Order one sheet.

Where you must join, double-sided butyl seam tape in 3-inch rolls is the standard method: clean both faces, prime if the tape calls for it, press it down hard, then roll the joint. Roofing splice tape works the same way. Both are tapes; there is no gluing EPDM the way you solvent-weld PVC pipe. Keep seams above the permanent waterline so they stay inspectable and never sit under head pressure.

Every hole you cut is a future leak unless it is compressed between two gaskets. Use a proper bulkhead fitting with a gasket on the wet side, backed by a flat, supported patch of wall. Silicone behind a flange is a repair pretending to be an installation. Put a knife gate valve on any bottom drain line before it disappears under concrete, and see the rest of the plumbing and valve fittings for unions, bulkheads and check valves.

Then flush before fish: fill, run everything 24 hours, dump that fill, refill. Seam tapes and primers are solvent products carrying a California Proposition 65 warning, and a wasted first fill costs water rather than koi.

Repairs and patching

Find the leak first. Stop the pump and let the level drop on its own; wherever it stabilises is your leak height. If it only drops with the pump running, look at the waterfall, the plumbing, or a stream liner edge instead.

Then patch dry. Drain below the damage, clean with the primer in the kit, cut the EPDM patch round rather than square so the corners cannot lift, and extend it two inches past the damage all round. Roll it firmly and leave it a few hours before refilling. Underwater sealants buy time; they are not a repair. Twice a year, walk the rim and check the band of liner above the water, the only part exposed to sunlight and the part critters chew.

When a liner is the wrong answer

We sell liner and still tell people this. A liner is the wrong choice when:

  • You want vertical walls. A liner cannot hold a true vertical face without block behind it, and vertical walls are the best predator defence a koi pond has.
  • The pond is formal. Crisp geometry, a raised viewing wall, coping that must sit flat: liner fights all of it, and the pleats show.
  • The pond is very large or complex. Past what one sheet covers, or with multiple bottom drains and mid-water returns, the count of penetrations and seams argues for a monolithic shell.
  • You have gopher, ground squirrel or serious root pressure. Burrowing animals go through rubber, and no liner warranty covers it.

The alternative is a shotcrete or block shell with a pond-rated coating. Concrete work typically runs $50 to $130 per square foot installed and lasts 50 years, with vertical walls, integrated drains and a floor sloped to a sump. Most dedicated koi ponds are built this way, and the honest reason more people do not is money. If you are unsure which side of that line your project sits on, call the shop. What to do first

Measure the hole at its deepest point, run the formula with two feet of overlap per side, and order underlayment in the same square footage at 8 oz or better. Those two decisions are most of what separates a pond that holds water for twenty-five years from one that gets rebuilt.

How thick should a pond liner be for koi?

Forty-five mil EPDM is the standard for koi ponds and what we recommend for essentially every backyard build. Sixty mil is the same rubber, a third heavier, and harder to fold into shelves without kinking. If the ground is rocky, reach for heavier underlayment rather than thicker liner. That is what actually prevents punctures.

What size pond liner do I need for a 10 x 8 ft pond?

For a 10 x 8 ft pond three feet deep, buy a 20 x 18 ft sheet, or 360 square feet. That is the pond dimension plus twice the maximum depth plus two feet of overlap each side. Measure to the deepest point, and round up to the next available width.

Is EPDM pond liner safe for koi?

Firestone's installation guide describes PondGard as a fish friendly synthetic rubber membrane that is safe for fish and wildlife. Ordinary roofing EPDM is a different compound and may carry additives not intended for fish, so buy the pond-grade product.

Do I really need underlayment under a pond liner?

Yes. Non-woven geotextile at 8 to 10 oz per square yard costs about a fifth of what the liner costs and stops stones and root tips working through. Some listings call it optional. That is technically true and a poor trade on a pond you plan to keep for decades.

Can you have wrinkles in a pond liner?

You will have folds, and that is correct. A curved, shelved pond cannot be lined without taking up excess somewhere. Gather the slack into deliberate pleats and press them flat rather than pulling the sheet tight. A stretched liner is a thinned liner, and it fails at the shelf edges first.

How long does an EPDM pond liner last?

Twenty to thirty years is realistic for 45-mil EPDM over underlayment, and plenty of ponds run longer. The failures we see are almost never the rubber itself. They are punctures from something sharp underneath, root penetration, or damage to the band above the waterline.
