Aqua Ultraviolet Classic is the ultraviolet sterilizer most serious koi keepers end up with. The housing is Teflon-coated for reflectivity, the ballast is external, and it runs a single pass of water past a high-output UV-C lamp to kill the free-floating algae spores that turn a pond green — plus the bacteria and parasite stages travelling with them.
Every wattage in this listing ships as a complete, ready-to-plumb unit — sterilizer housing with the quartz sleeve installed, the matched lamp or lamps, and the correct transformer. Nothing to buy separately to get it running.
Pick your wattage
Size by pond volume using the freshwater column below, then check that your pump's actual flow is at or under the unit's max flow rate. If your pump pushes more than the unit can handle, tee off a bypass rather than sizing down.
| Wattage | Pond size, freshwater | Max flow | Lamps | Inlet / outlet | Saltwater | Unit size |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 W | 5–200 gal | 642 GPH | 1 | 3/4" or 2" | 70 gal | 16" × 3-3/4" × 6" |
| 15 W | 200–500 gal | 700 GPH | 1 | 3/4" or 2" | 75 gal | 16" × 3-3/4" × 6" |
| 25 W | 500–1,200 gal | 1,200 GPH | 1 | 3/4" or 2" | 150 gal | 20" × 3-3/4" × 6" |
| 40 W | 1,200–2,000 gal | 2,900 GPH | 1 | 3/4" or 2" | 325 gal | 36-7/8" × 3-3/4" × 6" |
| 57 W | 1,500–3,000 gal | 3,200 GPH | 1 | 3/4" or 2" | 355 gal | 20" × 3-3/4" × 6" |
| 80 W | 2,200–4,400 gal | 3,678 GPH | 2 | 2" or 3" | 600 gal | 36-7/8" × 3-3/4" × 16-1/2" |
| 114 W | 2,200–4,400 gal | 3,900 GPH | 2 | 3/4" or 2" | 700 gal | 20" × 3-3/4" × 16-1/2" |
| 120 W | 4,400–6,000 gal | 4,080 GPH | 3 | 2" | 900 gal | 36-7/8" × 3-3/4" × 21-3/8" |
| 160 W | 6,000–8,500 gal | 5,400 GPH | 4 | 2" | 1,200 gal | 36-7/8" × 8-5/8" × 17-1/2" |
| 200 W | 8,500–13,000 gal | 6,600 GPH | 5 | 2" | 1,500 gal | 36-7/8" × 8-5/8" × 22-1/2" |
| 240 W | 13,000–17,000 gal | 7,200 GPH | 6 | 2" | 1,800 gal | 36-7/8" × 8-5/8" × 22-1/2" |
Every flow rate above is calculated at the end of lamp life — 14 months. That is unusual and worth understanding: most manufacturers publish the numbers a brand-new lamp produces. These are the numbers you still get on the lamp's last day.
Sterilizer duty or clarifier duty
The same unit does both jobs; the difference is how much water you push through it.
- As a sterilizer — sized to the table above. You get genuinely clear water plus control of free-floating bacteria and parasite stages. This is what you want for a koi pond.
- As a clarifier — a higher flow rate through the same unit will handle a considerably larger pond, but it only knocks back algae. Expect the water to keep a green tint unless you also have 50–75% plant coverage or heavy shade.
Aqua UV expresses the dose ladder in µW/cm²: the max flow in the table is the 30,000 µW/cm² rate, and dropping to one third of that flow gets you 90,000 µW/cm² for maximum kill.
Installing it
- Plumb it after the filter, on the return line. Before the filter works, but you will wait 7–10 days for clear water instead of 3–5, and debris can crack the quartz sleeve.
- Run it continuously. UV has no residual effect — it only acts on water inside the chamber at that moment.
- Replace the lamp every 14 months of continuous use. The lamp keeps glowing well past the point where its UV-C output has fallen off, so go by the calendar, not by whether it lights.
- Electrical: 120 V / 60 Hz standard. Draw runs from 0.48 A on the 8–57 W units up to 2.55 A on the 240 W. Cord is 15 ft on the 8–57 W, 8 ft on the 80–240 W.
Things to know before you buy
- Your biofilter is safe. UV kills bacteria drifting through the chamber, but the colonies living in your filter media and on pond surfaces never pass through it and are unaffected.
- Switch the UV off while medicating. Aqua UV's own instruction — UV radiation can degrade the treatment.
- Drain it completely for winter, or bring it indoors. Water left inside will freeze and crack the housing, and Aqua UV specifically excludes freeze damage from warranty.
- Never look at a lit UV lamp outside the housing. UV-C causes severe eye and skin burns.
- Wipers are available as a factory option, but Aqua UV does not recommend them for saltwater and using one there voids the warranty.
Parts and consumables for this unit
A UV sterilizer is not a fit-and-forget item — the lamp is a 14-month consumable and the quartz sleeve is a wear part. We stock the lot:
- Replacement UV lamp — 8 W to 57 W. The one you will buy again every 14 months.
- Quartz sleeve with rubber seal — 8 W to 57 W. Replace when cleaning no longer restores clarity.
- Rubber seal for the quartz sleeve (A40004) — the small purple one, on its own.
- Quartz cap with ring (A40011) — the larger clear blue threaded cap. Easy to mix up with the seal above.
- 4-hole lamp end connector (A40002).
- Classic replacement transformer — 8 W to 57 W, 120 V. Also available as a Nema transformer (40 W to 240 W) or a raw transformer (40 W, 57 W, 80 W).
- EZ-Twist cap top and EZ-Twist O-ring.

Running an 80 W or larger? Those are multi-lamp units and the lamp and sleeve counts differ by model, so give us a call or send a photo of the label rather than ordering blind — we would rather get it right than have you ship a box back.
Why buy from ChampKoi?
ChampKoi has built and maintained koi ponds from our San Jose, California facility since 1998. We run Aqua UV on our own systems, we stock the replacement lamps, quartz sleeves and transformers, and we can tell you which wattage actually fits your pond rather than selling you the biggest one.
