Goshiki is the reason to buy from Kanno. Their Goshiki carry a dense blue-black net over the asagi base with hard-edged red on top, and Japanese dealers talk about 'Kanno Goshiki' as if it were a variety of its own. In 2020 a 70 cm Kanno Goshiki took the Mature Champion title at the All Japan Nishikigoi Show, something a non-Gosanke variety almost never does.
Hiroshi Hirasawa founded the farm in the early 1970s in Mushigame, one of the Yamakoshi hamlets in the hills above Nagaoka. His son Kazuhiro Hirasawa runs it now and does the pairings, and he has a reputation among Niigata breeders for trying new parent combinations every year instead of repeating last year's spawn.
Sanke and Showa are the second string, bred for body and size with bloodlines brought in from inside and outside the prefecture, and the farm also produces Kohaku and Ginrin versions of its main varieties. Buy Kanno for Goshiki. If you want a Gosanke to show, other farms have a deeper bench.
