Marujyu is a Tancho and Goromo farm. The Tanaka family bred Showa here for decades, and older hobbyists still remember Marujyu Showa, but the current generation makes its name on Tancho Kohaku, Tancho Showa and Goromo, with straight Kohaku, Sanke and Showa alongside.
Shigeyoshi Tanaka is the third generation and runs the farm with his two brothers. His grandfather Shigekichi started it in Mushigame, Yamakoshi, around 1955, and his father Shigeo ran it after him. The October 2004 Chuetsu earthquake wiped out nearly all of Marujyu's stock. The brothers rebuilt smaller and concentrated on a limited output of high-grade Gosanke and Goromo, most of which sells into the Japanese market, so the fish you see abroad are a small slice of what they keep.
By the farm's own account around 2.5 million fry hatch each spring and get culled, selection after selection, down to the keepers. Go to Marujyu for Tancho, Goromo and Gosanke, including some Ginrin Showa. The range is narrow on purpose.
