Pattern Description

Kujaku should display a well-balanced Matsuba pattern across its metallic, white base color. The reticulated scale pattern is typically overlaid with vibrant colors such as red, orange, or yellow, which should be evenly distributed.

Name Meaning

The name 'Kujaku' is derived from the Japanese word for peacock, reflecting the variety's opulent and colorful appearance that resembles the bird's plumage.

History

Kujaku was developed in the early 1960s by breeder Toshio Hirasawa of the Maruju Koi Farm. It originated from a cross between a Hikarimuji (metallic single-colored koi) and an Asagi, leading to its distinctive metallic sheen and net-like pattern.

Ideal Characteristics

Judges and collectors look for a strong metallic sheen, a clear and uniform Matsuba pattern across the body, and vibrant, well-defined colors without bleeding or muddiness.

Commonly Confused With

Goromo, which also has a reticulated pattern but lacks the metallic sheen and is not classified under Hikarimoyo. Kujaku's metallic sheen and more vibrant colors distinguish it from Goromo.

Judging Criteria

Judges evaluate the clarity and uniformity of the Matsuba pattern, the quality and evenness of the metallic sheen, the vibrancy and distribution of the overlay colors, and the overall body conformation.

Identification Tips

  • Look for the metallic sheen and net-like Matsuba pattern.
  • Check for the presence of vibrant red, orange, or yellow colors overlaying the white base.
  • Note the clear distinction between the colors and the pattern, which should not bleed into each other.
