When to feed what: a temperature guide

Koi feed by water temperature, not by the calendar. Here's the simple version.

Spring50–65°F
Wheat germ

Koi are waking up. Start slow with easy-to-digest wheat-germ food as metabolism returns.

Feed once a day or less

Summer65–85°F
Growth + color

Peak appetite and growth. High-protein growth food, plus color food for show fish.

Feed 2–4× a day

Fall50–65°F
Wheat germ

Wind down. Switch back to wheat germ and taper frequency as the water cools.

Feed once a day → less

WinterBelow 50°F
Stop feeding

Koi go dormant and can't digest food. Stop feeding entirely until spring warm-up.

Do not feed

The one rule never to break: never feed high-protein growth or color food in cold water (below ~60°F). Koi can't digest it, and undigested food in the gut is a serious health risk. When in doubt, feed less, or wheat germ only.
