Hikari Pond Solutions® Ich-X® is the pond-strength version of the formalin and malachite green treatment most koi keepers reach for first when white spots appear. It uses malachite green chloride rather than the oxalate salt, in the Leteux-Meyer formula.
This is the pond concentrate, not the aquarium bottle. It is roughly five times stronger than Aquarium Solutions Ich-X. Dose it at the pond rate below, not at the aquarium rate you may have seen elsewhere.
What it treats
- Ich (white spot, Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
- Fungal infections (saprolegniasis)
- Velvet (oodiniasis) and trichodiniasis
- Other protozoan-caused conditions
Dosage
- Change at least one third of the pond volume before the first dose, and 10–25% before each repeat dose.
- Add 1 teaspoon (about 5 mL) per 50 gallons — one fluid ounce treats 300 gallons.
- Repeat at least every 24 hours. With close observation it can be repeated as often as every 8 hours; 8 hours is the minimum interval.
- Continue for a minimum of 3 days past the last visible sign of infection.
- Effective down to 50°F.
- Calculate your true volume: length × width × average depth in inches, divided by 231.
Before you dose — please read
- Remove activated carbon and clean or replace mechanical media. Leave filtration and circulation running.
- Increase aeration. Formalin lowers dissolved oxygen, and the first few hours after a dose are when fish are most at risk.
- Do not combine with other medications, or with sulfinate, sulfoxylate or sulfur-based water conditioners — that includes several common dechlorinators.
- It stains. Permanently, in many cases: silicone and sealants, rock, concrete, plastic, clothing, counters, flooring and carpet. Wear gloves and mind your pond surround.
- May harm invertebrates, filter feeders especially.
- Do not freeze. Green crystals under the cap or clumping in the bottle mean the product froze and is now toxic to fish — discard it rather than dosing.
- If fish show distress at any point, do an immediate 50% water change.
Details
- Label ingredients: water, formaldehyde (<22%), methanol (<7.5%), malachite green chloride (<0.2%).
- At label dose this gives roughly 0.05 mg/L malachite green and 15 mg/L formalin in the pond.
- 16 oz treats 4,800 gallons. 1 gallon treats 38,400 gallons.
- For ornamental fish only. Not for human, veterinary or food fish use.
- California Proposition 65 warning: this product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and reproductive harm. Harmful or fatal if swallowed, causes serious eye damage, and can irritate or sensitise skin. Keep away from children and wear eye protection when pouring.
