Short-thread bulkhead fittings for taking a pipe through a pond or tank wall, in 3/4", 1", 1-1/2" and 2".
Short or long?
The difference is how thick a wall the barrel can span. Short-thread fittings suit thinner walls — liner, fibreglass, thin poly tanks, skimmer and waterfall box walls. If you're going through block, concrete, plywood, or a liner sandwiched against a backing board, you want the long-thread version instead. Measure your wall before ordering; a short fitting that can't reach through simply won't seal.
Fitting it properly
- The gasket goes on the flange side, inside the pond. Flange and gasket on the wet side, nut on the dry side. This is the mistake that causes almost every bulkhead leak — a gasket under the nut has nothing to seal against.
- Hand tight, then a fraction more. Roughly a quarter to a third of a turn past hand tight is enough to seat the gasket. Do not put a wrench on it. Over-tightening cracks the flange or distorts the wall, and you'll find out when the pond is full.
- The hole is not the pipe size. A 2" bulkhead needs a hole considerably larger than 2". Confirm the required hole diameter before you cut — ask us if you're unsure.
- Clean and de-burr the hole so the gasket sits on a flat, smooth face.
- If you're threading pipe into the fitting, use PTFE tape and roughly half a turn past hand tight.
