Identifying Kohaku

  1. Look for the absence of black (sumi) markings, which differentiates it from Sanke and Showa.
  2. Check the sharpness and clarity of the red (hi) edges against the white base.
  3. Ensure the red markings do not cross the eyes or the base of the pectoral fins.

Commonly Confused With

Kohaku can be confused with Sanke, which also has red and white coloration but includes black (sumi) markings. The absence of sumi distinguishes Kohaku.

Pattern Description

The red markings (hi) should be well-balanced and evenly distributed over the body. The edges of the hi should be sharp and clear against the white base, with no bleeding or blurring of the color. The hi should ideally not cross the eyes, the base of the pectoral fins, or the dorsal fin.

History of Kohaku

Kohaku was first bred in the early 19th century in Niigata, Japan. It has since become the benchmark for all koi, with its breeding and development leading to the creation of many other varieties.

What Does "Kohaku" Mean?

Kohaku translates to 'red and white', representing the two colors of the koi. This variety is deeply rooted in Japanese culture, symbolizing good fortune and success.
