Nitrite (NO2) is the second stage of the nitrogen cycle and the one that catches people out. Ammonia gets the attention, but nitrite spikes a week or two later as the filter is still establishing, and it does its damage quietly: it binds to koi blood and prevents oxygen being carried, so fish suffocate in water that tests fine for oxygen.
Reads 0 to 5 ppm in pond water, 180 tests per kit. Watch nitrite closely on a new pond, after a filter clean, and any time you have dosed a treatment that may have set the bacteria colony back.

My review comes with a bad experience turned immensely positive by the hard working staff at Champion Nishikigoi. I had spent a number of weeks debating on, and finally ordering a Showa upwards of 1k as the jewel of my collection. After purchasing the fish, I was notified that the fish was not in the pond and that it was possible that it was purchased in person earlier that day or that the listing had been updated without the initial listing having been removed. This was extremely disappointing to me. However, the team at Champion Koi personally reached out and the owner made recommendations for replacement. They provided me with a discount on the replacement fish, but more importantly, they actually listened to my concerns and my dismay at the experience. Champion Koi made real observable change as a response updating their website to include a warning about this very rare occurrence and making a guarantee of a 10% credit for anyone who would have a similar experience. It is extremely rare to find a business that cares enough to make actual change based on a customer experience and show that they actually care about their customers. They have certainly earned my business and they should definitely have yours!
