Key Features
Scaleless (doitsu) skin with a line of mirror scales along the dorsal line, blue base color, and red (hi) markings.
Pattern Description
Shusui display a blue, scaleless back with a line of mirror scales running down the dorsal line. The red (hi) markings appear on the sides, below the lateral line, and can extend down to the belly. The face, cheeks, and gill plates may also show red.
Name Meaning
Shusui translates to 'autumn water', reflecting the clear, crisp blue of the variety that resembles the sky of an autumn day in Japan. The name also hints at the serene beauty these koi bring to ponds, reminiscent of a peaceful autumnal scene.
History
Shusui was first developed in 1910 by Yoshigoro Akiyama by crossing Asagi with German mirror carp. This was the first successful creation of a scaleless koi variety, marking a significant milestone in Nishikigoi history.
Ideal Characteristics
Judges look for a well-balanced body, clear blue skin without blemishes, and well-defined, symmetrical hi markings. The dorsal scales should be neatly aligned, and the hi should not bleed into the blue base color.
Commonly Confused With
Shusui can be confused with Asagi, their scaled counterparts. The key difference is the scaleless body of Shusui, except for the row of mirror scales along the dorsal line.
Judging Criteria
Judges evaluate the clarity and quality of the blue skin, the symmetry and intensity of the red (hi) markings, the alignment of dorsal scales, and overall body conformation.
Identification Tips
- Look for the scaleless body with a single line of mirror scales along the dorsal line.
- Note the clear blue base color and the red (hi) markings along the sides.
- Check for the presence of red on the cheeks and gill plates.
