pH tells you where your pond is right now. KH tells you whether it is about to move. Koi ponds consume carbonate hardness continuously through nitrification, respiration and rainfall, and once KH runs out there is nothing anchoring pH at all. It then swings hard overnight, and fish that looked fine at lunchtime are in trouble by morning. Testing pH without testing KH is watching the symptom and ignoring the cause.
This kit covers both hardness measurements: general hardness (GH) in tap and pond water, and carbonate hardness (KH) in tap, fresh or salt water. If you already own a master test kit, KH is the one parameter it does not include, and the one most likely to catch you out. Test monthly, more often after heavy rain or a large water change, and buffer before KH reaches zero rather than after.

My review comes with a bad experience turned immensely positive by the hard working staff at Champion Nishikigoi. I had spent a number of weeks debating on, and finally ordering a Showa upwards of 1k as the jewel of my collection. After purchasing the fish, I was notified that the fish was not in the pond and that it was possible that it was purchased in person earlier that day or that the listing had been updated without the initial listing having been removed. This was extremely disappointing to me. However, the team at Champion Koi personally reached out and the owner made recommendations for replacement. They provided me with a discount on the replacement fish, but more importantly, they actually listened to my concerns and my dismay at the experience. Champion Koi made real observable change as a response updating their website to include a warning about this very rare occurrence and making a guarantee of a 10% credit for anyone who would have a similar experience. It is extremely rare to find a business that cares enough to make actual change based on a customer experience and show that they actually care about their customers. They have certainly earned my business and they should definitely have yours!

Thankfully I live just 45 min away but even if I didn't I would highly, highly, recommend and buy from this location. Tom and staff are awesome. The care they have for their fish is incredible. They have quarantine tanks in the back that are specifically treated before selling and will not sell to you until that quarantine period is over. if you do want one they will set it aside for you until it is ready to take home. I started out a few years ago and they told me the average koi hobbyist will rebuild their pond three times... Guess what... Last year I increased my pond size for the third time. The koi I have are amazing (recommended by both Paul and Richard) and enjoyed by the entire neighborhood. The staff again are very patient and helpful. And I secret I will not out this person. An employee from a competitor hangs at Champion to visit on his days off :). 5+++ Stars
