Identifying Asagi

  1. Look for the net-like scale pattern on the back.
  2. Check for red/orange coloration on the belly, cheeks, and fins, not on the back.
  3. Asagi have fully scaled bodies, unlike their scaleless counterpart, Shusui.

Commonly Confused With

Shusui, which is the doitsu (scaleless) version of Asagi, can be confused with Asagi. The key difference is the scale type; Asagi have fully scaled bodies, while Shusui have a row of scales along the dorsal line only.

Pattern Description

Ideal Asagi have a clear, net-like pattern of indigo or darker blue scales on their back. The red or orange coloration should be limited to the belly, cheeks, and fins, without invading the back.

History of Asagi

Asagi are considered one of the most ancient koi varieties, with their origins tracing back to the early 19th century in Japan. They are believed to have naturally occurred and were later selectively bred for their unique coloration.

What Does "Asagi" Mean?

Asagi translates to 'light blue' or 'pale blue-green', reflecting the primary coloration of this variety. The name is deeply rooted in Japanese culture, symbolizing clarity and calmness.
