Suda is the farm to buy from if you want a long fin (butterfly) koi bred in Japan. Very few Niigata farms bother with Hirenaga at all. Suda makes them a specialty, in Kohaku, Sanke, Showa and metallic forms, and selects them for body and fin symmetry the way a Gosanke breeder selects for body.
The rest of the output is Ginrin: Ginrin Kohaku, Sanke and Showa, plus Hikarimono such as Yamabuki Ogon, and Kumonryu. Most of what Suda raises is exported.
Kazutaka Suda runs the farm, registered as Suda Fish Farm Co., Ltd., in the Katakai district of Ojiya. The company lists about 10 hectares (10 chobu) of ponds by its own figure, starts harvest in early October and shows fish through to May. It also raises medaka.
Suda is not where you go for a show Gosanke. It is where you go for a long fin or a Ginrin that was raised in Ojiya by a Japanese breeder. ChampKoi imports koi from Suda Koi Farm.
