When to feed what: a temperature guide

Koi feed by water temperature, not by the calendar. Here's the simple version.

Spring50–65°F
Wheat germ

Koi are waking up. Start slow with easy-to-digest wheat-germ food as metabolism returns.

Feed once a day or less

Summer65–85°F
Growth + color

Peak appetite and growth. High-protein growth food, plus color food for show fish.

Feed 2–4× a day

Fall50–65°F
Wheat germ

Wind down. Switch back to wheat germ and taper frequency as the water cools.

Feed once a day → less

WinterBelow 50°F
Stop feeding

Koi go dormant and can't digest food. Stop feeding entirely until spring warm-up.

Do not feed

The one rule never to break: never feed high-protein growth or color food in cold water (below ~60°F). Koi can't digest it, and undigested food in the gut is a serious health risk. When in doubt, feed less, or wheat germ only.

Two foods look the same. Which do I buy?

Most "color" or "growth" foods do the same job; the difference is grade and budget. A simple way to choose:

Good · everyday value
Aqua Master & Hikari Staple

Reliable, affordable daily nutrition for a healthy pond. The right choice if you feed a lot of fish or are new to koi.

Better · all-rounders
Hikari Gold & Nijikawa

Daily growth with noticeable color enhancement. A great balance of quality and price for hobbyists who want their koi to pop.

Best · show grade
Saki-Hikari (Deep Red / Pure White)

Probiotic, breeder-grade diets that maximize color and finish on show koi. Targeted reds, whites and growth.

How much should I feed my koi?
A good rule is only as much as your koi finish in about 5 minutes. Scoop out anything left over so it doesn't foul the water. It's always safer to underfeed than overfeed.
Floating or sinking pellets?
Floating pellets let you watch your koi feed and check their health, which makes them the most popular choice. Sinking pellets suit shy fish and competition feeding, and are often used for high-protein growth diets.
Which pellet size do I need?
Match the pellet to the fish: small/medium pellets for koi under ~10", large pellets for bigger koi. If your pond has mixed sizes, a medium pellet works for most. Every food here offers a Pellet Size option at checkout.
Can I feed color food all year?
Use color food selectively in the warm season. Feeding high-color formulas year-round can cause red (hi) to bleed into white areas on Kohaku and Sanke, which hurts the pattern. Many keepers alternate color and staple food.
